Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Scotts Head is open water, with some woodland. A nearby park adds mown lawns and planted trees to the local pollen mix. With much of the immediate area made up of open water, local pollen production is limited, though pollen can still drift in from surrounding land.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Then come the grasses, strongest in mid-spring and fading by mid-fall. Warm, damp weather from late spring into late fall also raises mold spore levels. Within each of these periods, warm, dry and windy days push levels higher, while rain clears the air.

Does pollen in Scotts Head come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Scotts Head based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Scotts Head, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
