Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this location in North Rocks is woodland, with a good deal of built-up land. A stream or river nearby means riverside trees such as willow and plane tree are part of the local pollen picture. Olive is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with maple also present. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside plantain and pigweed among the weeds.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and olive and maple are in full flower. Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into mid-fall. Plantain and pigweed flower through much of the warmer half of the year. In warm, humid weather from midsummer into early fall, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in North Rocks come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in North Rocks based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in North Rocks, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
