Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Mount Panorama is open grassland, with some woodland and built-up land. Allergenic trees nearby include willow. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and pigweed and plantain are the main weed sources. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and willow is in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into early fall. The season closes with pigweed and plantain from early summer into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Mount Panorama come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mount Panorama based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mount Panorama, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
