Local Environmental Conditions
The area around this part of Miami is mostly built-up land, with a good deal of open water. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Grass pollen is a substantial part of the local mix as well. Around here, street trees, gardens and lawns supply most pollen in the built-up parts.
Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into mid-fall. Weeds on open ground add a smaller late peak from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from late summer into late fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive. Weather shapes each of these periods: dry, windy spells drive levels up, and showers wash pollen out of the air.

Does pollen in Miami come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Miami based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Miami, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
