Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Loch Sport is surrounded mainly by wetland, with a good deal of woodland and some open water. Close to Lake Reeve, lakeside vegetation adds to local tree pollen. In the immediate area, the woodland makes trees an important source; wetland vegetation adds grasses, sedges and rushes. Reeds and other tall wetland grasses can release large amounts of pollen into the air.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in early spring. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by early fall. Rain is heaviest in spring, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. Weather shapes each of these periods: dry, windy spells drive levels up, and showers wash pollen out of the air.

Does pollen in Loch Sport come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Loch Sport based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Loch Sport, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
