Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Killarney is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. Along a watercourse nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. There is plenty of grass pollen here too. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from midsummer into mid-fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive.

Does pollen in Killarney come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Killarney based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Killarney, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
