Local Environmental Conditions
This location in Kariong is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of built-up land and some open grassland. The damp ground beside a watercourse nearby supports trees, shrubs and reeds, adding to local pollen. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside plantain and pigweed among the weeds.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in late winter. Grasses take over in mid-spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Plantain and pigweed flower through much of the warmer half of the year. Fall is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Kariong come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kariong based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kariong, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
