Local Environmental Conditions
This location in Kangaroo Valley is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. With this much woodland around, trees are an important local pollen source. Grasses and weeds such as plantain round out the local mix. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds. Undergrowth, clearings and woodland edges add smaller amounts of grass and herb pollen.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grasses take over in late spring and keep pollen in the air into early fall. Plantain flowers through much of the warmer half of the year. Rain is heaviest in fall, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. Day to day, sunshine and wind lift the counts, while a spell of rain can bring them down sharply.

Does pollen in Kangaroo Valley come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kangaroo Valley based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kangaroo Valley, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
