Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Kakadu sits among a blend of woodland and open grassland, plus some wetland. The damp ground beside running water nearby supports trees, shrubs and reeds, adding to local pollen. Trees are an important local pollen source, given how much woodland surrounds the area. There is plenty of grass pollen here too.
With warm weather all year, between about 25°C and 30°C, pollen is present in most months rather than in one short season. Levels tend to be highest in the drier months around June to August. During the rainy season, frequent heavy downpours wash much of the pollen out of the air. In warm, humid weather from early summer into mid-fall, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in Kakadu come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Kakadu based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Kakadu, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
