Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this part of Inner West is built-up land, with a good deal of woodland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Plane tree is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with olive also present. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and pigweed and pellitory are the main weed sources.
Plane tree and olive lead the season in early spring, as temperatures climb to around 15°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Then come the grasses, strongest in mid-spring and fading by mid-fall. The season closes with pigweed and pellitory from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from midsummer into early fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive.

Does pollen in Inner West come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Inner West based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Inner West, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
