Local Environmental Conditions
The Central Coast combines coastal eucalypt forest and casuarina along its beaches and lakes with grazing pasture further inland, plus extensive suburban gardens and street tree plantings across its towns between Sydney and Newcastle. Large tracts of national park and state forest fringe much of the region, preserving substantial areas of native bushland. Lakeside and estuarine vegetation around the region's coastal lakes adds a further distinctive habitat element.
The Central Coast's pollen season runs from August through January, with tree pollen from eucalypts and wattle peaking in August and September and rye grass pollen from October to December, bringing an elevated thunderstorm asthma risk during spring storms consistent with the broader temperate south-east coast, and mild coastal humidity keeping some tree species flowering a little longer than further inland. Milder coastal humidity compared with inland parts of the state can keep some tree species flowering a little longer.
