Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Cape Otway is heavily wooded. Trees are an important local pollen source, given how much woodland surrounds the area. Grass pollen adds noticeably to the overall load. Gaps in the canopy, trails and forest edges give grasses and herbs room to grow. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in early spring. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by late summer. Weeds on open ground add a smaller late peak from early summer into early fall. In warm, humid weather from midsummer into early fall, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in Cape Otway come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Cape Otway based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Cape Otway, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
