Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Balladonia is open grassland, with some scrubland and woodland. Along running water nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. Locally, open grassland adds grass and weed pollen; scrubland contributes pollen from shrubs, grasses and herbs.
The year opens with tree pollen, which is highest around early spring. Grass flowering starts in early spring, is strongest around late spring and winds down by midsummer. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall, from plants on verges and waste ground. Weather shapes each of these periods: dry, windy spells drive levels up, and showers wash pollen out of the air.

Does pollen in Balladonia come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Balladonia based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Balladonia, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
