Whittier's air quality reflects the San Gabriel Valley's enclosed position in the Los Angeles basin, with vehicle emissions from I-605 and SR-60 and the surrounding industrial and residential character generating elevated NOₓ. The Puente Hills create topographic enclosure to the southeast, while the valley position means Whittier accumulates the San Gabriel Valley's combined vehicle emissions under persistent basin inversions throughout most of the year.
