Visalia's air quality reflects the San Joaquin Valley's enclosed basin position between the Sierra Nevada and the Coast Range, sharing the valley's California-worst air quality conditions with the additional contribution of the surrounding Tulare County dairy farming and citrus operations generating agricultural ammonia and organic emissions. The persistent valley inversion traps vehicle and agricultural emissions throughout winter, while summer ozone from the valley's vast agricultural and vehicle emission sources regularly produces some of California's highest readings.

When is air pollution at its worst in Visalia?
Air quality across Visalia rises and falls with the seasons — the shortest stretch of clean air usually falls in the wetter winter months, whereas hot, sunny summer conditions drive persistent ozone problems, compounded by wildfire smoke risk into early autumn. Coastal breezes offer some relief compared to inland valley locations that see heavier smog buildup.
Are air quality levels in Visalia based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
