Surprise's air quality reflects the Phoenix metropolitan area's Valley of the Sun enclosed basin, with vehicle emissions from the Loop 303 and Grand Avenue (US-60) and the rapidly expanding suburban development in the northwest Phoenix corridor contributing elevated NOₓ. Windblown Sonoran Desert dust from the surrounding open desert areas contributes PM10 during haboob events, while summer ozone from the vast metropolitan traffic and intense desert heat are the primary recurring air quality concerns throughout the year.

Monsoon storms in July and August can either clear the air with rain or stir up dust ahead of the storm front.
Are air quality levels in Surprise based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
