South Hill's air quality reflects the Puget Sound region's Pierce County suburban corridor south of Seattle, with vehicle emissions from SR-512 the primary local source in this large unincorporated Pierce County community. Summer wildfire smoke from Washington and Oregon forests is an increasingly severe seasonal concern, while the surrounding Cascade foothills create modest topographic variation and consistent Pacific maritime airflows from Puget Sound generally provide reasonable ventilation throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in South Hill?
Like most US cities, South Hill sees air quality shift from season to season: rain-heavy winters keep the air unusually clean compared to much of the country, but August and September wildfire smoke can dominate the season, occasionally driving particulate levels sharply higher for several days. Winter temperature inversions can briefly trap wood-smoke in low-lying valleys, but these episodes are usually short-lived.
Are air quality levels in South Hill based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
