San Jacinto's air quality reflects the San Jacinto Valley's severe topographic enclosure in Riverside County between the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains, with vehicle emissions from SR-79 the primary local source. The valley's near-complete mountain enclosure creates persistent temperature inversion episodes that concentrate ozone and PM2.5, while windblown dust from the San Jacinto Valley's dry lake bed contributes PM10 and the broad valley basin consistently produces some of Riverside County's more challenging air quality conditions throughout the year.

The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.

Are air quality levels in San Jacinto based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
