Las Cruces's air quality reflects the Mesilla Valley's partial topographic enclosure between the Organ Mountains to the east and the Doña Ana Mountains to the northwest, with vehicle emissions from I-25 and White Sands Missile Range military vehicle and rocket test operations contributing NOₓ and PM10. Windblown Chihuahuan Desert dust from the surrounding arid landscape generates elevated PM10 during windy periods, while the Juárez Valley's cross-border agricultural burning and vehicle emissions from Ciudad Juárez contribute to the regional air quality background.
