Kingsport's air quality faces industrial challenges from the Eastman Chemical Company complex, one of the US's largest chemical manufacturing operations generating elevated VOCs, NOₓ, and industrial PM2.5 in the Holston River valley. The surrounding Appalachian ridgelines create significant topographic enclosure, while summer ozone from the naturally high biogenic Appalachian VOC emissions combining with industrial and vehicle NOₓ is the primary warm-season concern.
