Kennewick's air quality reflects the Columbia River basin's partial topographic enclosure in the Tri-Cities area, with the surrounding Horse Heaven Hills and the Blue Mountains creating a natural bowl that can concentrate vehicle emissions from US-395 and agricultural dust from the surrounding Columbia Basin irrigation farming. Summer wildfire smoke from the surrounding Inland Northwest forests is an increasingly frequent severe concern, while the Columbia River corridor provides limited ventilation on most days.
