Jersey City's air quality reflects its position directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan, exposed to the combined vehicle, industrial, and tunnel ventilation emissions from one of the world's most trafficked urban waterways. The Holland Tunnel and the Lincoln Tunnel approach roads generate concentrated NOₓ, while Port Jersey and the Bayonne Bridge industrial corridor contribute PM2.5. The Hudson River provides some ventilation, but Jersey City consistently records some of the New York metropolitan area's more elevated urban readings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Jersey City right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Jersey City is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 37.6/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 PM (O3: 37.6/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Jersey City?

When is air pollution at its worst in Jersey City?

Jersey City follows a fairly predictable seasonal air quality pattern: the calmest air of the year usually arrives well after the summer ozone season fades, but summer heat waves bring the highest ozone risk, compounded by pollution drifting in from the wider region. Dense urban traffic corridors add a persistent background level of pollution that varies less by season than ozone does.

Are air quality levels in Jersey City based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
