Houma's air quality reflects its position in the Louisiana bayou country at the heart of the Terrebonne Parish oil and gas extraction region, with offshore support operations, the surrounding petroleum and chemical industry infrastructure, and vehicle traffic on US-90 contributing elevated VOCs, NOₓ, and PM2.5. Gulf of Mexico southerly breezes provide general ventilation, while the flat Louisiana coastal marshland terrain allows reasonable dispersal, and the concentration of offshore petroleum industry support operations makes petroleum-related emissions the most distinctive local air quality characteristic.
