Highland's air quality reflects the Inland Empire basin's severe topographic enclosure in San Bernardino County, with vehicle emissions from SR-330 and I-210 contributing local sources. The San Bernardino Mountains to the north create significant topographic enclosure, while the persistent basin inversion traps vehicle and regional freight emissions throughout much of the year, and Highland shares the Inland Empire's California-worst air quality conditions with neighboring San Bernardino.
