Grand Junction's air quality reflects the Colorado River valley's partial topographic enclosure between the Book Cliffs to the north and the Uncompahgre Plateau to the south, with vehicle emissions from I-70 and the surrounding Piceance Basin oil and gas extraction operations generating elevated VOCs and NOₓ. Winter temperature inversions in the valley can trap emissions for extended periods, while summer ozone from the concentrated oil and gas extraction in the surrounding Grand Valley adds the primary warm-season air quality concern.

When is air pollution at its worst in Grand Junction?

Like most US cities, Grand Junction sees air quality shift from season to season. Typically, spring and autumn generally bring the cleanest, most stable air, while wildfire smoke drifting in from across the region is the main summer concern, while winter inversions can trap pollution locally. Higher-elevation, more exposed locations generally avoid the worst of the valley inversion episodes.

Are air quality levels in Grand Junction based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
