Galveston's air quality benefits from its direct Gulf of Mexico barrier island position, with powerful Gulf breezes providing some of Texas' most consistent maritime ventilation along the exposed Galveston Island shoreline. The primary local concerns are petrochemical and refinery emissions from the Texas City and La Marque industrial corridor on the mainland to the north, and vehicle traffic on I-45 approaching the island, while the open Gulf exposure and consistent sea breezes effectively dilute all but the most severe industrial emission events.
