Federal Way's air quality reflects the South Puget Sound position between Seattle and Tacoma, with vehicle emissions from I-5 and the surrounding mixed commercial and residential character contributing local sources. The Sound provides maritime ventilation, while summer wildfire smoke from the surrounding Pacific Northwest forests is an increasingly severe seasonal concern and the proximity to the Port of Tacoma's industrial corridor contributes background diesel PM2.5 on southerly wind days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Federal Way right now?

On 15 July 2026, overall air quality in Federal Way is fair. NO2 is the main pollutant at 26.5/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 AM (O3: 58.7/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Federal Way?

On 16 July 2026, air quality conditions in Federal Way will be worse than today, with AQI forecast at poor at 60.6/100. Pollution peaks around 4:00 AM (O3: 60.6/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Federal Way?

Federal Way experiences a distinct seasonal swing in air quality, as spring is often the freshest stretch, sandwiched between winter rain and summer fire season; by contrast, late summer wildfire smoke is the biggest concern, sometimes pushing air quality into unhealthy territory for days at a stretch. Prevailing onshore winds usually keep pollution moving rather than letting it settle.

Are air quality levels in Federal Way based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
