Delano's air quality reflects the San Joaquin Valley's enclosed basin position in Kern County, sharing the valley's notorious California-worst air quality conditions. Vehicle emissions from SR-99 and surrounding grape and cotton farming operations contribute PM2.5, while the Delano Mandaree wind farm corridor provides some intermittent natural ventilation, though persistent valley inversions trap winter emissions and summer ozone from the valley's combined agricultural and vehicle sources produces consistently some of California's highest seasonal readings.

Delano's air quality has a clear seasonal rhythm. In short, the cleanest air usually comes in winter, when storms periodically flush pollution out of the basin, whereas summer sunshine and heat drive some of the worst ozone readings in the country. The mountains ringing the basin can trap pollution close to the ground for days when winds are calm.

Are air quality levels in Delano based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
