Anchorage's air quality reflects the Cook Inlet coastal basin's partial topographic enclosure between the Chugach Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range to the north, with vehicle emissions from Glenn Highway and the surrounding road network contributing localised PM2.5 and NOₓ. Wood-burning stoves during Anchorage's cold winters contribute seasonal PM2.5, while the Cook Inlet's tidal patterns and Gulf of Alaska maritime air generally provide reasonable ventilation on most days throughout the year.
