Ponferrada's air quality reflects the Bierzo basin at the El Bierzo valley in the Cantabrian mountains, with vehicle traffic on the A-6 national road and the surrounding coal mining legacy and industrial operations generating elevated PM2.5. The enclosed Bierzo basin surrounded by the Cantabrian and Ancares mountain ranges creates significant topographic concentration under winter inversions, while the Atlantic westerlies from the Galician coast provide the primary ventilation pathway through the mountain barrier on most wind days.

When is air pollution at its worst in Ponferrada?

Does air quality in Ponferrada vary by season? Winter is generally the most challenging season, since low wind speeds and temperature inversions prevent traffic and wood-smoke pollution from dispersing. Conditions tend to ease in spring, as more active weather systems bring the wind and rain needed to disperse ground-level pollution. The long, hot days of summer favour ozone build-up, which can spike on the stillest, sunniest afternoons. Conditions tend to stabilise in autumn, as cooling weather and increasing rain reduce the ozone spikes typical of summer. Inland locations like this typically see harsher winter inversions and hotter summer ozone spikes than areas closer to the coast.

Are air quality levels in Ponferrada based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
