Móstoles' air quality reflects its position in the southern Madrid metropolitan area, with vehicle traffic on the A-5 and M-506 corridors and the surrounding suburban and light industrial character contributing elevated NO₂. The flat Castilian Meseta to the south provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, while winter temperature inversions in the greater Madrid basin can concentrate vehicle and heating emissions across the entire southern metropolitan corridor including Móstoles, Leganés, and the surrounding commuter belt municipalities.

When is air pollution at its worst in Móstoles?
Does air quality in Móstoles vary by season? Winter tends to bring the year's weakest readings, as stagnant, cold air lets heating smoke and vehicle emissions build up rather than clear away. Spring often marks a turning point, with increasing storminess and rainfall helping to clear accumulated exhaust and smoke from the air. High summer temperatures and strong sun exposure drive ozone levels up, occasionally combined with smoke from nearby wildfires during dry spells. As autumn progresses, cooler temperatures and more frequent rain tend to bring air quality back toward its yearly average. Away from the moderating effect of the sea, this area experiences starker seasonal air quality swings than coastal Spain.
Are air quality levels in Móstoles based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
