Leganés' air quality reflects its position in the southern Madrid metropolitan industrial corridor, with vehicle traffic on the M-45 and the surrounding industrial and automotive manufacturing operations contributing elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. The Madrid metropolitan basin's winter temperature inversion problem affects the entire southern metropolitan ring, while the flat Castilian Meseta south of Madrid provides some dispersal on southerly wind days, and Leganés' industrial character makes it one of the more polluted municipalities in the greater Madrid area.

When is air pollution at its worst in Leganés?
When is air quality typically worst in Leganés? Winter high-pressure systems tend to produce the year's worst episodes, as still air traps traffic fumes and heating smoke at ground level. Spring is typically when conditions begin improving, as increasing wind speeds help disperse traffic emissions before they can accumulate. During summer, strong sunlight and high temperatures accelerate ozone formation, occasionally offsetting the drop in traffic and heating-related emissions. Autumn usually sees a steady return to cleaner conditions as the ozone-favouring heat of summer fades and rainfall picks up. Being inland, this area sees more extreme summer heat and winter cold, which sharpens the seasonal contrast in air quality.
Are air quality levels in Leganés based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
