Alcoy's air quality reflects the enclosed Serpis river valley in the Valencian interior between the Prebética and Bética mountain ranges, with vehicle traffic on the N-340 and the surrounding textile and paper manufacturing legacy — Alcoy being a major Spanish paper and textile centre — contributing local sources. The mountain valley's topographic enclosure creates periodic inversion episodes under calm conditions, while Mediterranean easterlies from the Costa Blanca provide the primary ventilation pathway throughout the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Alcoy?
What time of year has the cleanest air in Alcoy? Winter tends to bring the year's weakest readings, as stagnant, cold air lets heating smoke and vehicle emissions build up rather than clear away. Spring usually brings an improvement as more frequent rain and stronger winds help clear the air and wash out pollutants that built up over winter. Summer's combination of intense sun and high temperatures makes ozone the main concern, occasionally compounded by wildfire smoke during dry, windy spells. Conditions generally improve through autumn as cooling temperatures reduce ozone formation and returning rains help disperse remaining pollutants. Coastal sea breezes here usually aid dispersal, but summer visitor traffic and periodic dust intrusions from North Africa can still cause spikes.
Are air quality levels in Alcoy based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
