Albacete's air quality benefits from the elevated La Mancha plateau position at 686 metres, with the flat Castilian plain providing generally good wind dispersal on the prevailing westerly and northwesterly winds. Vehicle traffic on the A-31 and the surrounding agricultural and knife manufacturing industry contribute the primary local emissions, while the open Meseta plain prevents the topographic pollution trapping seen in more enclosed Spanish basins, making Albacete one of the more moderate air quality environments among inland Spanish cities.

When is air pollution at its worst in Albacete?
How do the seasons affect air quality in Albacete? The winter months typically bring the weakest air quality of the year, as calm anticyclonic conditions trap vehicle and heating pollution near the surface. By spring, air quality usually starts trending upward as the calm winter inversions give way to more unsettled, breezier weather. Summer readings are shaped mainly by ozone, which builds under strong sun and heat, sometimes worsened by drifting wildfire smoke. Early autumn can still bring warm, stagnant spells before the season's returning rain and wind begin clearing the air. The plateau's continental climate, with cold winters and hot, dry summers, tends to produce more pronounced seasonal differences here.
Are air quality levels in Albacete based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
