Krugersdorp's air quality reflects its position in the West Rand mining corridor west of Johannesburg, with gold mine dust from the surrounding West Rand tailings dumps contributing elevated heavy metal particulates alongside vehicle traffic on the N14 and the surrounding industrial operations. Winter Highveld temperature inversions concentrate mining dust and vehicle emissions across the plateau, while the elevated 1,700-metre position aids background dispersal on windy summer days and the legacy mine dumps represent the most distinctive local PM10 source.
