Brits's air quality reflects the Hartbeespoort dam basin in the North West province, with vehicle traffic on the N4 and surrounding Vanadium Resources and platinum mining operations generating elevated PM10 and heavy metals alongside primary vehicle sources. Winter Highveld temperature inversions concentrate mining dust and vehicle emissions across the plateau, while the Magaliesberg mountain range creates dramatic topographic variation and the mining legacy represents the most distinctive local PM10 source throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Brits right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Brits is very poor. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 PM (SO2: 100/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Brits?

On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Brits will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at very poor at 100/100. Pollution peaks around 12:00 AM (SO2: 100/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Brits?

Air quality at Brits is most likely to dip during the dry winter months from May to August, when dust and smoke from seasonal burning can build up on still, windless days across the bushveld. Conditions generally improve from November onward as the summer rains settle dust and wash pollutants from the air throughout the region.

Are air quality levels in Brits based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
