Olsztyn's air quality reflects its position in the Masurian Lake District of northeastern Poland, with residential wood and coal burning generating seasonal PM2.5 alongside vehicle traffic on the S51 expressway. The numerous Masurian lakes surrounding the city provide natural ventilation corridors, while the relatively low industrial base compared to southwestern Poland and the Baltic weather systems from the north generally provide cleaner background air than the heavily industrialised Silesian corridor throughout the year.
