Nijmegen's air quality reflects its position in the Gelderse Poort floodplain at the Netherlands-Germany border, with the Rhine and Waal river confluence providing natural ventilation and the surrounding logistics and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The flat Dutch river delta terrain generally allows reasonable dispersal on most days, while the broader Rhine-Ruhr industrial corridor's background pollution elevates baseline PM2.5 and NO₂ above typical Dutch rural values, and prevailing westerlies carry relatively clean North Sea air into the Nijmegen area.
