Teramo's air quality reflects the Tordino river valley in the Abruzzo Apennine foothills at 265 metres, with vehicle traffic on the A24 motorway and surrounding manufacturing and university operations contributing local sources. The surrounding Gran Sasso and Sibillini massifs create significant topographic variation, while the Adriatic sea breezes provide coastal ventilation on easterly days and the elevated Apennine position generally maintains better conditions than the flat Italian Po Valley basins throughout most of the year.
