The Taranto Gulf's sea breeze provides coastal ventilation, but the scale of the Ilva complex's emissions has driven Italy's highest documented industrial pollution health impacts, with the city's southern Italy position and prevailing winds from the northwest concentrating plant emissions over the residential quarters.
