Ravenna's air quality faces significant industrial challenges from the Ravenna petrochemical and industrial port complex, one of Italy's largest chemical and refining clusters generating elevated SO₂, benzene, and PM2.5 in the flat Po delta plain. The Adriatic sea breezes provide some coastal ventilation, but the surrounding Po Delta's flat low-lying terrain and the industrial complex's scale make Ravenna one of northern Italy's more industrially impacted coastal cities, with the refinery corridor consistently producing the highest local emission readings.

When is air pollution at its worst in Ravenna?

The most noticeable dips in Ravenna's air quality come when the canal network pine and poplar pollen peaks, or because of the Ravenna petrochemical and industrial port complex, one of Italy's largest chemical and refining clusters; wind and rain both help clear the air fairly quickly here.

Are air quality levels in Ravenna based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
