Potenza's air quality benefits from its remarkable elevated position at 820 metres on the southern Apennines in Basilicata, with the surrounding mountain ridgelines providing natural ventilation corridors from multiple directions. Vehicle traffic on the A3 and SS407 and the regional capital's services and manufacturing contribute local sources, while the elevated Apennine position generally provides better background air quality than the flat Italian Po Valley basins below throughout most of the year.
