Novara's air quality faces the Po Valley's enclosed flat basin between the Alps and Apennines, with vehicle traffic on the A4 motorway and surrounding chemical and manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The flat Po plain's persistent winter anticyclones trap emissions under extended inversion periods, while the Ticino river corridor provides limited ventilation and summer Po Valley ozone from agricultural and vehicle sources adds a warm-season dimension.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Novara right now?

On 9 August 2026, overall air quality in Novara is fair. PM1 is the main pollutant at 26.1/100. Pollution peaks around 3:00 PM (O3: 57.4/100).

Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Novara?

On 10 August 2026, air quality conditions in Novara will be similar to today, with PM1 forecast at fair at 29.3/100. Pollution peaks around 1:00 PM (O3: 58.4/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Novara?

Air quality dips in Novara mostly track plane and poplar pollen peaks and periods of vehicle traffic on the A4 motorway and neighbouring chemical and manufacturing industry; cooler, breezier weather later in the year tends to bring things back down.

Are air quality levels in Novara based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.

Why doesn’t the forecast always reflect wildfire impacts?

Airmine’s forecast uses CAMS (Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service) as its background atmospheric model. While CAMS includes wildfire emissions, these are derived from satellite observations and are not available in real time. During rapidly evolving wildfire events, there may therefore be a delay before increased emissions are incorporated into the model. As a result, the forecast may temporarily underestimate PM₂.₅ and other pollutants associated with wildfire smoke.

During rapidly evolving wildfire events, CAMS may lag by approximately 1–2 days before increased wildfire emissions are fully represented, which can lead to temporary underestimation of PM₂.₅ concentrations in Airmine’s forecast.
