Matera's air quality benefits from its extraordinary elevated Basilicata plateau position at 401 metres on the Murgia plateau, with the city's unique Sassi cave dwelling geography and the surrounding plateau landscape providing generally good natural ventilation. Vehicle traffic on the SS7 and the surrounding UNESCO heritage tourism and agricultural operations contribute local sources, while the elevated Murgia position generally maintains better background conditions than the flat Italian Po Valley basins throughout most of the year.
