Massa's air quality reflects the Tuscany-Liguria coastal plain at the foot of the Apuan Alps marble quarries, with vehicle traffic on the A12 motorway and the Apuan marble quarrying and processing operations generating elevated calcium carbonate and marble dust PM10 alongside the primary vehicle sources. The Tyrrhenian sea breezes provide coastal ventilation, while the Apuan Alps rising sharply inland create dramatic topographic variation and the marble quarrying represents Massa's most distinctive local air quality signature.
