L'Aquila's air quality reflects its dramatic position on the Aterno river plateau at 714 metres in the Abruzzo Apennines, with vehicle traffic on the A24 motorway and surrounding manufacturing contributing local sources. The surrounding Gran Sasso and Majella massifs create dramatic topographic variation, while the elevated Apennine position generally provides better background dispersal than the enclosed Po Valley below, and winter inversions in the high-altitude plateau basin are nonetheless a seasonal challenge.
