Carpi's air quality faces the Po Valley's enclosed flat basin in the Modena province, with vehicle traffic on the A22 motorway and surrounding manufacturing and food industry contributing local sources. The flat Po plain's persistent winter anticyclones trap emissions under extended inversion periods, while the surrounding Emilian agricultural landscape contributes agricultural ammonia and the Po Valley winter anticyclone creates the characteristic extended pollution episodes affecting all of northern Italy.
