Ulm's air quality reflects its position on the Danube at the Baden-Württemberg-Bavaria border, with vehicle traffic on the A8 motorway and the surrounding Daimler Truck and defence manufacturing industry contributing local sources. The Swabian highlands to the south and the Swabian Alb plateau to the north create topographic variation, while the Danube valley provides the primary ventilation corridor and the flat Danube plain between the two upland areas generally allows reasonable dispersal on most wind days throughout the year.
