Essen's air quality reflects its position at the heart of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation, with legacy steel and mining industry emissions combining with heavy vehicle traffic on the A40 and A52 motorway corridors to generate elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. The flat Ruhr basin provides reasonable wind dispersal on most days, but the sheer density of industrial and traffic emission sources maintains above-average European urban pollution levels throughout the year.
