Regensburg's air quality reflects its position in the Danube valley in eastern Bavaria, with vehicle traffic on the A3 and A93 motorways and the surrounding BMW manufacturing and electronics industry contributing elevated NO₂ and PM2.5. The Bavarian Forest to the northeast and the Frankish Alb to the west create topographic variation, while the Danube valley provides the primary ventilation corridor and the surrounding Bavarian plateau generally allows reasonable dispersal. Winter temperature inversions in the Danube valley can temporarily concentrate vehicle and heating emissions.
